An Accessory Dwelling Unit is a complete, separate home on the same lot as a main house — with its own kitchen, bathroom and entrance. California law has made them one of L.A.'s fastest-growing kinds of rental.

Detached ADU

A freestanding cottage in the backyard. The most privacy — usually its own yard space and entrance.

Garage conversion

A former garage rebuilt as a full studio or 1-bed. Often close to the street, easy for parking and bikes.

Attached ADU

An addition connected to the main house, with a separate entrance and no shared interior space.

Junior ADU (JADU)

Up to 500 sq ft carved out of the main house, with its own entrance and an efficiency kitchen.
